Length: 5 miles roundtrip

Difficulty: Difficult

Elevation Gain: 5,600 to 8,549

Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

Location: NCAR, between Eldorado Springs and Chautauqua

Just slightly higher than Bear Peak, South Boulder Peak offers the same incredible 360 degree vistas from its top, including a great view of the prominent Devil's Thumb rock formation that is so noticeable from Boulder . The best way to reach South Boulder Peak is from the South Mesa Trailhead on Eldorado Springs Drive. Head north along the Mesa Trail to the Shadow Canyon trail. At this point the trail steepens, ascending through giant sandstone rock formations to the peak. After a quick scramble to the summit you can enjoy views of Walker Ranch and the Indian Peaks to the west, and Boulder and the plains to east.
